Omorate, Ethiopia

School education for 200 Dassanech-Children

In partnership with Ethiopian Full Gospel Believers Church

The Dassanech are an indigenous ethnic group in the extreme southwest of Ethiopia. They inhabit the area on both sides of the border with Kenya.

The population lives semi-nomadically from cattle breeding and some agriculture. The standard of living is extremely low. Early marriage and genital mutilation of girls are common practice. School education is virtually non-existent.

To enable children to attend state schools in the nearest town of Omorate, Nehemiah Gateway is working with other partners to support the construction of a boarding school for 200 children. This gives these children the opportunity to attend local schools during the week. For many of the children, this is the first and only opportunity for elementary education.

Goals

  • Construction of a boarding school
  • School education for 200 children
